How to Prevent a Plumbing Emergency

Get emergency plumbing assistanceEmergency plumbing visits can be expensive. You not only pay for the expense of the fix, but you’ll also be shelling out extra for the off-hours or emergency visit. Avoid hefty plumbing bills by taking proactive care of your home’s plumbing system.

Know the Difference

The first step to preventing an emergency is to know the difference between an emergency and a non-emergency.

A plumbing emergency is one where you cannot locate the source of the problem or if it presents a health hazard to your or your family. Problems with your water heater may pose extreme danger to your home or family, consider calling a plumber to discuss a problem with your water heater right away.

So, it is an emergency…

If you are experiencing a true plumbing emergency, you should know how to stop the flow of water until a plumber can arrive to fix the problem.

Know where to find the main shut-off valves

The first step to ensuring that your home is protected from plumbing disasters is to know where to find your main water shut-off valve and how to use them. In the event of a toilet emergency, the shut off is located next to the toilet. Call Charles Moon to learn more about locating and using your main water shut-off valves.

Prevent a Plumbing Emergency

In order to prevent a plumbing emergency this winter, take extra care to avoid frozen or burst pipes in and around your home. Follow a few simple tricks to proactively protect your home’s plumbing.

Open cabinet doors on exterior sinks

Cabinet doors can prevent warm air from circulating in your bathroom or kitchen. To prevent frozen pipes, consider leaving cabinet doors open under sinks located on or near exterior walls. Consider moving dangerous chemicals or otherwise protecting your family and pets.

Allow the faucet to drip

In most cases, a dripping faucet is the sign of a plumbing concern. However, in the winter, you should allow a faucet to drip to avoid frozen pipes.

Leaving the faucet to drip will force water to continually flow through the pipes in your home. Choose a sink on the opposite side of your home from your main water supply and leave the water on lukewarm.

Cover outdoor pipes and spigots

Outdoor spigots commonly freeze or cause problems in the winter. To avoid problems, remove the hose from outdoor spigots and cover the spigot with an insulated cover.

Insulate water pipes

Lastly, protect pipes located on exterior walls or in the attic, basement, crawl space or garage. These pipes are especially likely to freeze or burst. Consider wrapping the pipes with insulated foam to protect them from winter weather. Call a plumber for more assistance.
